Local Attractions

Montagu was founded in 1851 and was named after John Montagu, then Colonial Secretary of the Cape. Montagu, once known as Ägter Cogman’s Kloof”, and before the tunnel which was constructed by Thomas Bain in 1877, Montagu was only accessible by crossing the Kloof river eight times, and strong teams of horses or oxen were required. The road through the Kloof was only tarred in 1931.

The Montagu Museum’s theme is the History of Montagu and its people in all aspects, and is very well worth visiting.

The Montagu hot mineral springs and baths which date back to the very early days of the of the area, and discovered by the trekkers who followed the course of rivers, are also now a “must visit”.

Lover’s walk is not only beautiful and enchanting, but enjoyed by young and old.

The Nature Garden, founded in 1954, is an absolute delight to visit.

For Birders, the Montagu Leidam and surrounding area offers over 70 species of bird.

The famous ‘tractor-ride’ to the top of the Langeberg mountains on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with the option of the ‘not to be missed’ potjiekos lunch is the talking point of Montagu.

A variety of wine cellars offer wine tasting and great wines, an extremely popular pastime in Montagu!

Horse riding, arts & crafts, quad biking, tea gardens, abseiling, fishing and cuisine restaurants and pubs, make Montagu a very exciting destination.

Hiking Trails
Montagu offers the following hiking trails:
Bloupunt Hiking Trail, 15,6km long, and takes about 6 – 9 hours. A wide variety of interesting features can be found on this trail; mountain streams, craggy cliffs, awe-inspiring rock formations, breathtaking views in all directions, many species of bird life, wild flowers and small water falls are all worth seeing.
Cogmanskloof Trail is 12,1km long, and can be completed in 4 – 6 hours. Beautiful rock formations, wild flowers including Aloes, proteas and Ericas are plentiful.
Badskloof is only 2,2km long, and hikers can visit the pools at the mineral springs on this trail.
